Choosing a Destination in Mexico

Are you a Canadian who has decided to get married in Mexico? You are in the right place because that’s our specialty!  If you aren’t quite sure how you ended up here, allow us to quickly introduce ourselves. At Something Azul, we are a boutique travel agency that specializes in destination weddings in Mexico and the Caribbean. We have toured hundreds of resorts and dozens of destinations so we can feel confident in helping you find the perfect resort for you and your guests. Our owner, Chelsea, has traveled to over 40 countries and counting!

When you decide to get married in Mexico, the next step is deciding WHERE in Mexico. It might surprise you, but each of the regions has a completely different vibe and energy and it’s important to match what you are looking for. Below, we have the top 5 most popular destinations from Canada and some quick tips and advice on each location to get you started. Remember, the best thing to do is schedule a complimentary consultation and then one of our (award-winning) travel agents and destination wedding planners can help you decide!

Los Cabos

There is something about Los Cabos. Los Cabos is made up of two destinations – San Jose del Cabo (the relaxing side) and Cabo San Lucas (the lively town with the view of the arch!). The waters are rough in both destinations so if you dream of swimming in the ocean, this is not the destination for you. On the positive side? Cabo has a desert climate and it only rains 6 days a year – less chance you get stuck in your back up location!

Puerto Vallarta

We are based in Calgary, so you know that we appreciate the short flight to Puerto Vallarta! Puerto Vallarta is one of the “original” tourist destinations in Mexico, so most of the resorts have been renovated at least once. This is our excuse to go all the time 😉 We need to keep up on which resorts are being updated!

Cancun

When people talk about Cancun, they often combine the Riviera Maya and surrounding areas. But when we talk about Cancun here, we are talking about the “Cancun 7” – a stretch of peninsula shaped as a 7 off the coast. Cancun is MILES of white sand beaches and turquoise water you won’t believe is real. Oftentimes, Cancun is thought of for cheap spring break vacations but there are some amazing luxury properties (like Le Blanc, for example). If the beach is a top priority, start your search with Cancun.

Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is considered one destination, but it is actually a huge stretch of coast south of Cancun. Playa del Carmen is the at the centre, with 5th ave being a major shopping hub for tourists. One of our favourite towns though, is Puerto Morelos which is smaller and has such a welcoming feel. If you check out a few of our favourite resorts in Mexico, you will find quite a few land in the Riviera Maya region.

Huatulco

Huatulco is a charming destination in Mexico and it has quickly become a tourist favourite – especially for Canadians! Keep in mind,  most of the resorts are set on a cliff so not all of the resorts are very mobility-friendly. But if you like HOT weather and want to visit a more authentic destination, Huatulco is an excellent choice.
